Remove the Rules

It's after midnight, so this counts as Wednesday, right?

I'm going to be a bit busy tomorrow--day game at AT&T and then writing group in the early evening, so I dropped NFSL and this post this evening, since I won't have the space to pack a laptop tomorrow. In fact, I'll have to do the morning pages on the road if I stay up too much longer.

But I'm so very cool with that.

I was in a slump this afternoon--dragging out the pens and paper and notebook for the short story and making myself crank out the four pages and ENOUGH. I finished a page, walked down to the cleaners for my laundry, put the laundry away, and listened to Jennifer Egan on a webcast as she talked about her method. She too starts off longhand. Then she spends the other 90% of her energy revising. I HAVE to get past the point that this needs to be publishable on the first run. I HAVE to enjoy writing fiction.

So I jogged between journaling and writing my short story tonight in writing group, and FINALLY HAD FUN WRITING FICTION. At one point I wrote a line that even made me laugh. I tore down all of my rules and let myself write anywhere and I actually produced some paragraphs that I would read again.

I'm thinking I need to read a page of a writing book every day so that I stop making this so difficult.

We'll see tonight at writing group, when I have to make a go of it again.

Write on.
