Last One Standing

This past week brought the arrival of September and the disappearance of yet another transit pass from my wallet, leaving me with just one, the morphed Translink-to-Clipper spaceship.

I had been dreading this transition, because the transition from the BART EZ Rider pass had been on the rocky side (it still has its moody days), but so far the Muni transition has been wonderful. Yes, not every bus has a working touchpad, but all the busses let the homeless on for free, so I have a legitimate complaint if by some rare fluke the card has to be checked. I have had no issues (knock on wood) with the underground touchpads either, even though there have been those patrons who stand there and struggle and finally have to go see the agent. And this morning I gave the touchpad on the above-ground portion of the N a try and no issues--just a friendly affirmation that yep, I have a September pass.

There are a number of times in the course of a day for other reasons that I say to myself, "We live the in 21st century and we can't fix THIS?" or "I live in a metropolitan community and we don't have THIS?" But when I operate this thing, there's a little sliver of the country girl who says, in a small voice in quiet prayer in the back of my brain..."WOW...all of this in just a chip in a card." There will be days, I'm sure, where I'll either be jaded or annoyed with a glitch in the system, but not this week. This week, I'm just quietly amazed.
